Hi Tiffanie,

I'm so sorry to hear that you've suffered with the disease for such a long time. It's close to impossible to get others heads around just how bad this gets. They look at you and think "They look okay".

One thing I'd ask you to look into is food related issues. You may be eating something that contributes to the fatigue, making your recovery much longer too.

Regards,
Mark

I was diagnosed with Kikuchi disease at the end of 2006 when I went into the doctor complaining of being so tired all the time, severe weakness in my arms and always feeling like I had a bad flu. On a side note, I asked him to feel my neck because I thought I had some swollen lymph nodes. A few days later, I was having a deep lymph node BX. The first pathologist who examined my lymph nodes could not decide if I had Kikuchis or Lymphoma so he sent my lymph nodes to Mayo for a second opinion. They confirmed Kikuchis disease but also mentioned that my cells looked like those of lupus as well. Mayo suggested I be checked for other auto-immune disorders such as lupus. My surgeon who removed the two lymph nodes also sent me to an oncologist after my Kikuchis diagnosis. I was extremely sick and he wanted to be sure I had a proper diagnosis. The AZ Cancer Center also confirmed the Kikuchis diagnosis. I really do not think anyone knows just how sick one can get from this disease. I am still sick with the severe fatigue, weakness, perpetual flu-like feeling and it is now 10/08. I am now hoping to get into Mayo to get a thorough examination. I sure hope all of you are feeling much better and are able to lead normal lives.

Hi there, I was diagnosed last August with Kikuchi Fujimoto disease. I had night sweats, low grade fever, extreme fatigue, left side cervical lymph node enlargement, and nausea. After diagnosis through lymph node biopsy it slowly went away (diagnose 8/07 lasted to (12/07). However, I feel like it is relapsing, now being 5/08, I am again fatigued, nauseated and with swollen lymph nodes now in my groin and axial area. Could the biopsy be wrong? Unfortunately, I must keep working through this thing as we could not financially survive. By the way, I am now 40, female and living in California.
I am feeling kind of lonely with this rare disease,
Hope all of you are better,
             Rhonda

Get a Mac! You won't regret it. Price a comparably equipped Mac to a Dell and see which one is more expensive. (Don't forget to add the support, security programs and max OS to be fair). I use a virtualized Win2K within Leopard to run any necessary Windows programs (Quicken, etc.), because it doesn't require activation like XP. Whatever you do, don't move to Vista.

There are many Perl vs Python debates out there on the Inter-web. Some objective, others bother on fanboy-ism.

I guess it helps for us to take a (shallow) dive in each direction and try to see the good and the bad of those languages, and try to assimilate them, or at least refer to them, when the suitable occassion arises.

We can be Jack of all trades, and still be master of some, I'd say :)

Mark,

I'm glad to read that your fatigue cylces have lengthened. But bummed out that the doctors don't have definitive answers.

Alicia asked about Python the other day. I'd like to to hear your take on how Python compares with awk, sed, perl, C, java, etc.

Enjoy your weekend.

Hi Mark,

I've been catching up on your blog. I'm glad to hear you feel better but also bummed out by the lack of answers from the medical community.

Python... just the other day, Alicia asked me, why Python? What makes it attractive relative to other languages? I don't know. I haven't looked at Python yet. Perhaps you might have a better view on how its compares with perl/C/java.

In terms of languages, I've gone in a different direction -- old school. I've been studying awk, sed and Expect. I started to look at Expect after reviewing a vendor's Expect script for finding bad flashes in the SAN switches. I noticed hacks in Net::Telnet don't seem necessary in Expect, looping to wait for output to handle ugly devices. Recently I had an opportunity to use the studying, I wrote a sed/awk/Expect script pipeline that finds bad flashes on routers. The pipeline is pretty neat with programs taking input and writing other programs. :-)

On flashes... I've seen 2 cases in the past 6 months where we've had to swap flashes because they were flagged as candidates for failure. This sounds just like memory -- quality matters, not all memory are equal.

Hello,
thanks for using VensterCE with PythonCE.
The font size specification is the main problem with PyCeIDE, this is is because I have developped it on a Hi-res device. The next release will include an hires and lowres version.

Unfortunately I don't think Python does Regex as well as Perl...I may be wrong, but it looks as cumbersome as other object-oriented languages who implement regular expression objects.

Did you try out the Python Challenge? I wanna punch the puzzle maker in the face after getting stuck on puzzle three for an hour... :P

Hi Mark,
I googled the term "kikuchi-fujimoto" and found your blog. I'm 24-year-old Brazilian, but Japanese descendant. I was diagnosed with Kikuchi-Fujimoto disease last march, after 2 weeks in the hospital. The first symptom was a painful lymph node inflammation in the neck (only one side was affected) and after that, I had fever, a horrible joint pain and night sweats. I had the biopsy and it confirmed the necrosis in the lymph node. However, recover was fast, abouth 40 days.

I hope you're better now.
yours,
Lucia

Sigh...why do they (Vodafone) treat their customers like idiots? First they disable the VoIP function on the Nokia N95, now this...

I'd say once your contract is up, bring it to your trusted phone shop and flash it with the generic HTC ROM.

*IF* you have a HTC phone, maybe. Here's an email I got on the 26th after getting fed up with my phone having to be reset so often.

Hello Mark,

It will not possible for branded devices like yours to upgrade the new Rom from HTC. Vodafone is your network provider, so basically you will have to use Vodafone's Updates. HTC is sorry about the inconvenience.

Thank you for your enquiry, Should you have any other problem, please do not hesitate to call us. Your Local number can be found at http://www.europe.htc.com/support/csbyphone.html

Thanks to Murali for the Python Challenge site heads-up.

Good to see you the other day Mark :)
